Genesis 38: 1-8

“And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took her, and went in unto her.

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er.

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.

And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

And Judah said he unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

Theme: Golden Rule

  • How you treat people is a reflection of the type of person you are

  • Not the person who’s receiving the comment whether good or bad.

  • Don’t respond according to how you are treated.

  •  Respond from a point of integrity from righteousness.

 Question:

Matt 5: 46 -48 For if you love them which love you, what reward have ye? (ANSWER) Do not even the publicans the same?

47 And if you salute your brothers only, what do you more than others? Do not even the sinners so? (NO DIFFERENCE).

48 Be ye therefore perfect (MATURE), even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect (ALL SUFFICIENT).

Joseph didn’t respond according to how he was treated

Joseph went from Pit, to Prison, to the Palace.  We know the story of Joseph in the Bible of how he was thrown in the pit by his brothers who called him a dreamer.  He later was taken out of the pit and ended up in jail falsely accused of making advances against his boss’ wife.  Joseph later gained authority in Egypt surpassing all in command but the Pharaoh

Nestled in this section in chapter 38 in Genesis is the story of a relationship of a Family a husband wife three sons and a Daughter in Law.

Namely Judah, Shuah and his 3 sons and Tamar:

Judah was the fourth born son of Israel (God’s first born).

Judah was the brother that influenced his brothers to spare the life of Joseph when he was in the pit (Gen. 37: 26-27).

Respond from a point of integrity from righteousness.

And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

Scripture Text: Genesis 38: 1-8

Verse 1.

And it came to pass at that time that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite (refuge city between Jerusalem and Laschish, ancient Canaanite royal city, David hid here with his men 1 sam 22:1 2Sam 23:13), whose name was Hirah (became Judah’s friend, a kind man who lived 1900 BC).

Directional: Went down doesn’t imply a spiritual descent but a geographical change a change in atmosphere (compare Samaritan).

What he did accomplish was the effective separation from his brothers.

Verse 2

And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite, whose name was Shuah (prosperity) and he took her, and went in unto her.

While in the house of the Adullamite he met and later married a woman named Shuah.

Shuah became Judah’s wife but later died verse 12.

Verse 3

And she conceived, and bare a son; and he called his name Er (Watcher).

Verse 4

And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan (Vigorous).

Conceived again mean that these boys where no twins, (as Cain and Abel, Jacob and Esau Manasseh and Ephaim, Pharez and Zerah ) by mentioning one conception there must have been a 9 month interval between the conceptions.  Scripture doesn’t tell us that Judah went back to be with the other brothers or stayed among the Canaanites.

Verse 5 not

And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah (promised but not given): and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.

Altogether three sons

And Judah took a wife for Er his firstborn, whose name was Tamar.

And Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord; and the Lord slew him.

And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.

And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother.

P.O.V.s

  • Respond from a point of integrity from righteousness.

  • Especially regarding another’s possessions

  • Be a good steward.

Onan disobeyed his Fathers instructions and the Lord Slew Him.

LEGAL AND CUSTOMS: The keeping of ordinances the primogenitor had exclusive rights to the inheritance of the Father.  “Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine.” Ex 13:2

Er: Watcher – Wicked

Onan: Vigorous not given – Spilled Seed

When you are subject to work for to the benefit of another and you know that they were wicked be faithful.  Give it your best.  Put your best foot forward.  Know that this is your finest hour. Excel (out the box). Don’t spill your seed. Be effective where ever you are.  Make your ground good.

Tamar disappointed because Shelah was not given to her.

She dressed as a prostitute and when to receive her Father in Law when Shuah (prosperity) died twins born Zerah (shining, risen w/red cord) and Pharez.

It took Judah’s fourth son Pharez (breach) ancestor of Christ that would become the linage from which the Lion of the tribe of Judah would hail.

Black LionAside:

Jacob gives a blessing to all of his son Genesis 49:8-10 King James Version (KJV)

Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.

Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

Revelation:

SEEKING APPROVAL

Aside Posted on Updated on

Textual Definition: Desiring favorable opinions of others.

Scripture: John 12:42-43
Nevertheless many even of the rulers believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the approval of men rather than the approval of God.” NASB

MARCH tree-by-river

The Back Drop!

In this setting Jesus is celebrated among the people after Lazarus is raised from the dead (John 11:44) and Mary anointed his feet (John 12:4). Jesus taught contrasting light and darkness (John 12:35, 46). In our scripture He spoke concerning those among the Jews who believed in him yet refrained from confessing Him as Lord. (Romans 10:9). Were they were blinded by their own inaction? Was their faith without works? (James 2:20).
The scripture preceding verse 42 begins “Nevertheless,” this indicates a continuation of a previous thought: “This is why they were unable to believe, because Isaiah also said: He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, and be CONVERTED, and I would heal them (John 12:40). Was Jesus making it a point that because of a lack of confessing Him, one remains unconverted even after believing in him?

What is meant in the Scripture text when it says,
“He (God) has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts.”

MODERN CHRISTIAN CONCEPTS

Early Secret Christians:
Nicodemus (John 3:2) and Joseph of Arimathea (John 19:38) and many Pharisees believed on Jesus but failed to publicize their views.

Are Christians operating as secret Christians today?

If so what are the consequences?

Our Conversion into Christianity

Requires belief and confession

Conversion: our part is to place a high value upon belief in Christ and holiness as a way of life.

Celebration The people ignited the jealousy of the Jews, when celebrating Jesus on Palm Sunday. Celebrating Jesus is the most intelligent thing a person can do, however one may offend non-believers when doing so. Because of seeking the approval of others many fail to praise God.

Completion, Wholeness, HEALING, Maturity and Perfection are goals of holiness through Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

“Comparisons is the root of all feelings of inferiority” James Dobson
“Comparisons only lead to dead end.” Charles Stanley

A Closer Look

“The root cause of wanting the approval of others is the fear of rejection and the fear of losing something. Rejection results in feelings of worthlessness”… “People who constantly and fervently seek the approval of others live with an identity crisis. They don’t know who they are, and they are defined by what others think of them. The sad part is, if your security is built on others, you are fragmented.” (pg 444). “He who builds his hope on the people builds upon the sand.

God and You a majority!

…”If God be for us, who can be against us?” Romans 8:31

A wise man builds upon a rock. “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock” Matt.7:24.

Value the approval of God “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (II Tim 2:15).

SEX

Matrimonial-bed
Matrimonial-bed

Textual Definition: The physical union of a man and a woman that results in physical, relational and spiritual oneness.

Biblical Insight: I Corinthians 6:15-20

“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never!

(16) Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.

(17) But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.

(18) Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

(19) Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

(20) you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”

THEN & NOW

A Closer Look!

Then

In the scripture Paul highlights the Greek way of thinking is much different than today. The Apostle Paul addresses the Corinthians who were located in an ancient metropolitan of strategic importance for the spreading of the gospel. In the most prominent point of Corinth stood the pagan temple dedicated to the worship of Aphrodite (Greek) or Venus (Roman) the goddess of love and beauty. Sex played a part in the worship in this the temple housed one thousand prostitute priestesses. When Paul visited Corinth (Acts 18:1-18; Romans 16:21; 1 Corinthians 9:20). The Lord commanded him to speak boldly, and he did so, remaining in the city eighteen months. Finding strong opposition in the synagogue he left the Jews and went to the Gentiles (Acts 18:6). In Corinth Aphrodite worship Paul’s task to inform Christians in that environment that Christians should not practice fornication.

Now

Today, the infusion of sex by media advertisement and main stream society is by design to appeal to our human desire as sexual creatures. We are sexual creatures as well as physical, intellectual and social. “The body is not for sexual immortality but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body” (I Corinthians 6:13). Man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body this is the correct order. However, before we are converted many believe that man is a body, soul then spirit. Satan uses this nature to foster error upon the earth.

Our sexually is a key part of our humanity, therefore…

• Satan uses this to entice man to sin.

• Satan uses sex to develop strongholds in the lives of people.

• Satan uses sex to make slaves and influence people to defile their temples.

• Satan he wishes to be enthroned in your heart by enticements that appeal to our  humanity.

“You are not your own.”  What is meant by this Scripture text

Sex outside of the parameters that God has set forth is destroying families, teenagers, children, churches and every social institution in this nation. The damaging effects of sexual relationships effects Prince and Pauper, Christians and non Christians, Saved or unsaved. The statistics for pornography use is the same for those inside the church and outside the church also the rate of adultery is consistent with rather in church or out of the church.

Pornography: How do committed Christian men become addicted?

Porn is gaining a stranglehold on mainstream American culture. One reason is the false message that porn viewing is harmless and socially acceptable for the sexually frustrated. One reason it is not harmless is the number of casual porn viewers who end up sexually addicted. This describes the very real problem of extreme sexual behavior that is destructive to self and others. In his research, John found that experts believe tens of millions of people are addicted to sex.

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2008/march/20.7.html

The use of pornographic material among Christians continues to rise, reaching near epidemic proportions in the church. A study by Internet Filter Review revealed that 53 percent of Promise Keeper men viewed pornography the week before the survey.

INTIMACY (in-to-me-see) the goal

God designed Sex to take place in a relationship of marriage when taken outside of these confines it damages a person’s ability to be intimate.

When committing sexual immorality your just hurting yourself (I Cor. 6:18) intimacy in marriage many times requires personal sacrifice that fulfills your spouses need emotional detachment in godly relationships may result in sin.

God hears your prayers in healthy relationships.

Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered” (I Peter 3:7).

Caveat emptor” Let the Buyer Beware

Satan’s increasing his attacks and wants people to be afraid. Satan doesn’t let up because his time is short. Satan uses the same deceptions as he used in the Garden of Eden. Revelation 12:12

SEX APPEAL
Same Tactics – Different Day

For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world” (I John 2:16).

Evil’s First Encounter with humanity

For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise” (Genesis 3:5-6).

First “the lust of the flesh”
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food

Second: “the lust of the eyes”
it was pleasant to the eyes
“For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6).

Third: “the pride of life”
desired to make one wise: Extremely tempting and appealing to the intellect, A misdirection of authority. …”Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edified” (1 Cor. 8:1a).

Divorce

“Eni bimo fun ni kuro laale eni” (a baby mother is no more a concubine or mistress). Yoruba adage

The Bible is clear adultery is sin. However, what constitute adultery depends on the society you are in or what your moral values have. In several societies were polygamy is accepted, marrying several women does not constitute adultery or having concubines all over town. In America since the Clinton-Lewinski scandal the society has tried to re-define adultery and fornication. Baby Boomers call it shacking, today they call various fornicating activities called, “friends with benefit” and “rainbow party” and they see nothing wrong with these activities.

As a Christian and a believer in the infallibility of the scripture, I believe the biblical definition of adultery, which is having relationship (sexual or emotional) with someone outside of the boundaries of marriage (one man and one woman). When a married man or woman is involved in such acts it is called “adultery” and when an unmarried person is involved in such acts, it is called “fornication.”

Divorce Rates

According to Barna “In fact, when evangelicals and non-evangelical born again Christians are combined into an aggregate class of born again adults, their divorce figure is statistically identical to that of non-born again adults: 32% versus 33%, respectively.”

HOLINESS

It’s possible!

In Matthew 5: 27-28, Jesus took the definition of adultery to a new level

“You have heard that it was said, do not commit adultery, but I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

If you will allow God to have control of your sexual desire, He will show you how to live with a pure heart, whether you are married or single. Jesus was single Paul was single Hosea well that’s another lesson. Still, the lessons from Hosea can inspire some to remain pure while single.
