  • Micah Johnson, an Army veteran, received instruction at the Academy of Combative Warrior Arts in the Dallas suburb of Richardson about two years ago. “Reality is highly dynamic, you will be drawing your firearm, moving, shooting on the move, fixing malfunctions, etc. all under high levels of stress,” the website says. “Most people never get to train these skills as they are not typically allowed on the static gun range,”said the school’s founder and chief instructor, Justin J. Everman.

  • Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings described Johnson as “a mobile shooter” who had written manifestos on how to “shoot and move.”

  • St. Paul, Minnesota, during the Police shooting in Dallas, crowds gathered near the spot where an officer killed Philando Castile in a car on (7/6/16) Wednesday. In Minnesota, the shooting of Castile was streamed by his fiancée Diamond Reynolds live on Facebook.  As her 4-year-old sat in the back seat, his fiancée calmly narrated what was going on and showed viewers the dying man groaning and bleeding in the front seat.  Police officers pulled him over because of a broken taillight, the Facebook Live video showed Castille handcuffed by officers. In the video, she said that Castile went to reach for his license and registration but mentioned he had a pistol in the car, which he was licensed to carry, and the officer shot him multiple times. Castile was transported to a nearby hospital, but later died. said Reynolds, who was in the car with him.
  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crowds where also gathered in the parking lot where Alton Sterling was fatally shot  on (7/5/16) Tuesday where police tackled him in a parking lot.  Sterling, 37, was killed Tuesday near a convenience store in Baton Rouge, where he regularly sold CDs and DVDs outside a convenience store on Tuesday, July 5, when police arrived responding to an anonymous 911 report of a man in a red shirt threatening people with a gun, authorities told The Associated Press. Sterling, 37, who happened to be wearing a red shirt, and the two officers got into an altercation, and one of the officers shot him multiple times in the chest and back. By the time paramedics arrived, Sterling was dead. At least two videos taken of the graphic killing have circulated online, and both show that Sterling did not appear to be threatening the police in any way.

President Barack Obama, who was in Warsaw, Poland, said his team is keeping him updated. “We still don’t know all the facts, we do know there’s been a vicious, calculated and despicable act on law enforcement,” Obama said. “I believe I speak for every American when I say we are horrified.

President Barack Obama called Johnson a “demented individual” who does not represent black Americans any more than a white man accused of killing blacks at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, represents whites.  So we cannot let the actions of a few define all of us,” Obama said from Warsaw, Poland, where he attended a NATO summit.

OBAMA On Castille and Sterling
“We’ve seen such tragedies far too many times, and our hearts go out to the families and communities who’ve suffered such a painful loss,”
“When incidents like this occur, there is a big chunk of our fellow citizenry that feels as if because of the color of their skin they are not being treated the same. And that hurts. And that should trouble all of us.”
“But regardless of the outcome of such investigations, what’s clear is that these fatal shootings are not isolated incidents,” he continued. “They are symptomatic of the broader challenges within our criminal justice system, the racial disparities that appear across the system year after year, and the resulting lack of trust that exists between law enforcement and too many of the communities they serve.”
“This is not just a black issue, not just a Hispanic issue. This is an American issue. All fair-minded people should be concerned.  If communities are mistrustful of the police, that makes those law enforcement offers who are doing a great job, who are doing the right thing, that makes their lives harder,” Obama said, insisting that recognizing problems within law enforcement doesn’t equate to being anti-police.”
“When people say ‘black lives matter,’ it doesn’t mean that blue lives don’t matter,” Obama said, referring to police officers. “But right now, the data shows that black folks are more vulnerable to these kinds of incidents. There is a particular burden that is being placed on a group of our fellow citizens.”
The President commended the U.S. Department of Justice, along with the FBI, for taking over the investigation into Sterling’s death. “Although I am constrained in commenting on the particular facts of these cases, I am encouraged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation in Baton Rouge, and I have full confidence in their professionalism and their ability to conduct a thoughtful, thorough and fair inquiry, Obama said in his statement.”

Training that develops and corrects

The Spiritual Discipline unit pages 503 – 565.

Discipline is on page 509 in our textbook.

Scripture: Hebrews 12:10

NASB (New American Standard Version)

For they (earthly fathers) disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness.

Hebrews 12:10-11

KJV (King James Version)

CHRISTIAN CONCEPTS the MIND OF CAIN II Scorned10 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

11 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. (Verbs stressed in bold)

redteacherVocabulary: Discipline is synonymous with chastening

Chasten(ing, ed)

  1. To punish (in order to bring about improvement in behavior, attitude, etc.); to restrain, moderate
  2. To make chaste; to purify.
  3. To punish or reprimand for the sake of improvement; to discipline.
  4. To render humble or restrained.

Faith is needed to mature; when disciplined, without bitterness.

“There is a reticence in the church to talk about discipline.”

Vocabulary: Reticence

  1. tight-lippedness, discretion, avoidance of saying too much
  2. a silent and reserved nature

Purposes of reticence in the church could be due to outside influences other than the word of God.

The “Me” generation in the United States is a term referring to the baby boomer generation and the self-involved qualities that some people associated with it. The baby boomers (Americans born during the 1946 to 1964 baby boom) were dubbed the “Me” generation by writer Tom Wolfe during the 1970s; Christopher Lasch was another writer who commented on the rise of a culture of narcissism among the younger generation. The phrase caught on with the general public, at a time when “self-realization” and “self-fulfillment” were becoming cultural aspirations among young people, who considered them far more important than social responsibility.

Contrast quality of the early church:

“And all that believed were together, and had all things common” Acts 2:44.

CHURCH SKILLS: A lesson on Discipline when giving

Discipline is needed to enforce conformity when focusing on achieving specific goals.

Example: In a church building fund, a widow’s offering ($5.00) can be looked upon just as a wealthy businessman’s offering ($500).

Even though the larger offering would accomplish more in the long run receiving the poor as the rich is a godly principle and far exceeds regarding individuals more highly because of how much they can give.

    1. Parent: “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right  Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth. ” … (Eph 6:1-3).
  • Teacher: “Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him” John 3:2.
  • Supervisors: “His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord” Matt 25:23.
  • Authorities: …”But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil” Romans 13:4. (Judges/steel cell).

  • Holiness is associated to Discipline

“And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine” Leviticus 20:26.

RIGHT NOW   New Testament Discipline

“Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy” I Peter 1:16.

The wrong attitude is associated with Defeat

Esau despised (though little of) his birthright consequently he lost it.

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.

16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright. 17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. Hebrews 12:16-17.

Cain refused instruction his response (Gen. 4:7)”Am I my brother’s keeper?”

You can judge the quality of their faith from the way they behave. Discipline is an index to doctrine. Tertullian

Have a little talk with JesusSpiritual Discipline prepares people to carry the Gospel message

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”

Romans 8:14

  1. We are to respond to our corrective discipline with the faith that our loving Father is doing what is best.
  2.  We need to respond with the belief that it is for our good
  3.  We are to respond to our discipline with expectancy, not with shock
  4.  We are to respond to our correction with submission
  5.  It is wrong to think God is anger.
  6.  Another wrong response to the chastening of God is to get discouraged and give up.
  7.  The last wrong response the whole thing away

The Expectations of a Disciple of Christ

Correction is for training in our lives so that we may be conformed to the Lord Jesus Christ that we “go therefore and make disciples.”

“…The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy…”

SIFTING: The process of separating or filtering the good from the bad, the desirable from the undesirable.

Wheat: clip art by Charley Franz
Wheat: clip art by Charley Franz

Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail”(Luke 22:31-32).

God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith

Romans 12:3c

Understanding the

Power Principle

Satan has power, but no Authority.

  1. Authority is regimented

1. To form into a regiment. (from Latin) regimentum, ruler

2. Place into systematic order; systematize, subject to uniformity

3. Rigid order Physical (temporal troops) spiritual eternal troops)

  • Power (1849) exousia: authority, delegated influence, jurisdiction,

And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth” (Matthew 28:18).

For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones,or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him” (Colossians 1:16).

Thrones: (2231) hegemon: governor, (in time) official term, figurative place or province

Dominions (2963) kuriotes: governmental rulers, civil powers, rulers

Principalities (746) arche: chief (various applications) order, time place rank.

“Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases” (Luke 9:1).

OT account of sifting:

“Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?” (Job 1:9, read Job 1:6-12)

“And the evil spirit answered and said, Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?”

Acts 19:15

Does Satan know your name?

  1. Satan especially wants to disturb the move of God in the life of people. He wants to interfere with any type of godliness perpetrated by mankind.

  1. Because Adam sinned, those who abandon sin for a life with God are Satan’s targets.

  1. Satan notices those who God displays truth speakers, those examples of God’s contact with humanity.

  1. Satan has a severe hatred for humanity. Why is not important (not a concern for humanity), what is important for us is that Satan remains under your feet.

“We need to recognize the devil had to get permission from God. Satan doesn’t have a free hand with the Saints”(page 343).

Worship or Worry, God is still Sovereign.

  •  Worship

“For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” (Exodus 34:14).

“Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve” (Matthew 4:10).

  • Worry

Satan may enter your heart when your worried and fearful (as Satan entered Judas’ heart to betray Jesus (Matt 26:14; Mark 14:10; John 13:2:27).

Unbelief & Fear separates you from God eternally!

Those things which cannot be shaken may remain”

Competitive Setting                                                       (Heb 12:27b)

Jesus just revealed to his disciples that one of them is a traitor.

Satan entered Judas. Satan the deceiver entered Judas, afterwards the plan was in motion to deliver Jesus to the Jews. Judas lost F.O.C.U.S. Forever Occupied by Christ Undisturbed by Satan. He chose the Worry route instead of the Worship route.

God’s mission is your predetermined destiny of eternal life with the father. Satan’s mission is destruction and everlasting Hell fire and torment. God wants you to develop internally to combat the external. Satan wants you to focus on the external chaos and conform to it thereby tossing away your internal peace that God settles into your spirit.

Agitate What

Sin has no rhyme or reason, ask what not why! Ask what can I do to glorify God in this situation? (REB)

Filter Who

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” (Romans 8:35a)

Sift How

“Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord” (Ephesians 5:10).

Purify When

“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth”(John 17:17).

Grind Where

“Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled” (Luke 14:23).

Sovereign Principal:

Correction is part of the plan, God knows the end from the beginning (maze solving principle): and this present chastening is just for a season for your purification is as silver being purified seven times in a furnace of earth (Psalms 12:6).

God’s Methodology:

“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty” (I Corinthians 1:27).

For Correction:

My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: (6)For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. (7) If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? (8) But if ye be without chastisement, where of all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons” (Hebrew 12:5-8).
