In the Future,
after the church is raptured. During the Great Tribulation, God uses the uniqueness of two prophets, thought to be Elijah and Enoch, to cause many to repent. It is believed that these are Elijah and Enoch; because according to scripture, both left the Earth without dying (Genesis 5:24; 2 Kings 2:11).
The speech of these witnesses shall be given to an audience of Jews, preaching in Jerusalem during the time that the second temple in Jerusalem is standing, at the conclusion of the first half of the tribulation, these two martyrs (KJV) witnesses (from the Greek word martus) are slain by the Antichrist. These have the corresponding task of a prophet to place God consciousness into the hearts and minds of people.
The ministry of these two witnesses was directed towards the 144,000, who are the 12,000 of each tribe that are on earth in the last days. Initially, John is commanded by the Strong Angel to “Rise and measure the temple of God, and the altar, and them that worship therein” (Revelation 11:1), meaning to count them. These have received the seal of God, avoided the devastating effects of the first six seals, and the trumpet judgments. Now the 144,000 are subject to the ministry of the two witnesses.
The Great Tribulation
These two witnesses called lampstands (ambassadors of the church) and olive trees (representative of Israel), minister with power without wavering, even when confronted with great peril, they excelled in strength. Their role was preeminent and extended above the influence of kings or emperors. They preach for three and a half years and have power to proclaim many signs and wonders during the Great Tribulation. Their ministry in Jerusalem shall expand the globe through satellite and mass media communications.
God shall make an open show of His power during the Tribulation after these were given the task to “root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant” (1:10b); Physical changes as well as the horrid conditions in society brought about by Satan, the Beast and company, demanded the ministry of these two prophet/martyrs.
Soon after the death of the two witnesses, people worldwide celebrated and gave gifts to one another. The messages of righteousness had ceased, and the degenerate men on the Earth rested comfortably in their state of wickedness after these two witnesses were killed. The lifeless bodies of the prophets were a spectacle of humiliation, as for three days and a half lay in the streets.
The Hebrew tradition doesn’t allow for the embalming of human bodies after one dies, and unlike other faiths, the Hebrew tradition states that a person must be buried within three days after dying. The fact that the two prophets were left out in the streets was an attempt to expose any sympathizers who were valiant enough to remove the bodies for proper burial (I Samuel 31:12-13).
Finally God’s power is demonstrated when, “And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them” (Revelation 11:11-12).
God resurrected the two witnesses in front of their enemies as unbelievers watched in awe. Within the same hour, one tenth of the city was destroyed by an earthquake and 700 men died. The 144,000 of Israel reverenced God and gave Him glory.
THE ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION: The Great Blasphemy will occur when he sits in the rebuilt temple and proclaims himself God comes into play soon after the death and resurrection of the two witnesses. “This temple that the Jews will build on their return to Jerusalem will probably be destroyed by the earthquake that destroys the tenth part of the city, for the earthquake will synchronize with the “Great Earthquake” that shall occur at the breaking of the 7th seal, and the sounding of the seventh trumpet, and the pouring out of the seventh vial” (Larkin).
